3rd MAESTRI Doctoral Training School took place from February 20th till 26th, 2026

Even though it’s nearly the final event in the series, yet it still brings plenty of new elements: First time organised as purely online training; first time promotion of the training event on several communication channels and finally a significant increase in participants.

The training school is split into two parts. Part 1 covers the main fraction of the training school, realizing all five non-scientific sessions and two sessions of scientific training.

“The Doctoral Training Schools are important cornerstones in the excellence education program”, explains Prof. Chamonine, the Project Coordinator. “Taking into consideration the tough schedule of a PhD, we want to keep to the initial timeline of the training program to support the development of our Doctoral Candidates. At the same time, we want to give them the opportunity to participate at the IMCF conference[PF1]  in July at University of Vienna, one of our beneficiary partners.” Splitting-up the third Doctoral Training School seems advantageous from several point of views: less carbon emission due to reduced travel arrangements, responsible use of project funds and efficient time management, otherwise the doctoral candidates would have had to travel twice to Vienna.

Cooperation with Slovenian Partners

Although the doctoral students are only halfway through, we venture a first look towards the end of the project by discussing topics like grant writing skills – application for EU funding, or IPR protection and commercialization. For the latter the cooperation with experts from JSI and Rudolfovo proved to be very successful. In addition to the valuable input and practical experience they contributed, they also promoted the workshop through their communication channels. The lectures ordered from LUI were very useful as well. This resulted in us receiving many times more registrations. The thirty attendees belong to different fields of research which enriched the discussions and practical exercises during the workshop.

Further topics of the recent Doctoral Training School were improvement of scientific writing skills and assessment of personal development. The scientific part focussed on material science and FEA.

Outlook: come together in Vienna and Odense

Even though the online format offers various advantages, we are still looking forward getting into touch and fostering the personal contact within the MAESTRI network during the 2nd Part of Doctoral training school 3 in July at our beneficiary Partner University of Vienna. Then the scientific training about “Digital twins for magnetic soft matter” including a practical session will take place.

Another highlight, we are looking for, is the 2nd Annual Conference in September organised by the beneficiary partner Poramate Manoonpong at Southern Denmark University.

The final and fourth Doctoral Training School is scheduled for September too, focussing on transferable results and start-up spirit. The non-scientific training is about entrepreneurship, founding and commercialization ideas. The scientific training is dedicated to “Robotic Applications”. Four beneficiaries of the MAESTRI network, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Southern Denmark University, Prensilia s.r.l. and WEGARD GmbH, are specialised in this field and will take charge of these sessions.
